Each month, this book makes me sad. Why? Because it's so good and reads so fast, that I'm always left wanting more. Each month Tomasi seamlessly weaves 3 story lines together into one fantastic comic book.
The two main stories are the war on Daxam and the prison riot on OA. Together they manage to blend action and character progression without coming across as cliched or boring. Tomasi then generally adds 2-4 pages of a 3rd story line into each book. This month the 3rd storyline revolves around the search for the Anti-Monitor's body.
All 3 stories move forward, clearly building to dramatic moment, but end on a cliff hanger. The reason it works here is that we know all 3 threads will be given more attention next month.
Patrick Gleason draws some scary stuff. The prison riot is magnificent in its glory and its gore. you could spend quite a while looking at each panel, picking out details of death, destruction and salvation. The style is a little cartoonish, but still conveys weight and emotion in each scene.
Fans awaiting Blackest Night should start buying GL and GL Corps now to get all the back story you need and to just enjoy some great comic book storytelling!
