From the start I'll be honest. Loebs recent comic work has left a bad taste in my mouth. You know what I'm talking about. HULK. Yeah. I think it's beyond terrible.
That being said, I went into Ultimatum with an open mind, and I thought the first two issues were pretty much all flash and no filler. Beautiful art by Finch, and big Deaths, but they didn't really matter because the way it was done, you didn't really care. I'm also not a fan of how he had a bunch of characters die off panel, and just had people talk about it. "UH OH, THIS GUY IS DEAD, AND THIS GUY, AND THIS GIRL. THEY ARE ALL GONE!"
Come on, at least give them a panel! Sure none of the Ult X-men they did this with were any of my favorite so it didn't make me furious, but I'm sure there is someone out there that is a huge ULTIMATE NIGHTCRAWLER fan who is just out of his mind about this whole thing.
OKay, now that I've gotten that all laid out, I thought this issue was excellent. How could this be, when I had so much to gripe about with the previous two? Well this issue does have the same flashy moments, and oh yes, people die, but the difference is, Loeb makes the moments have weight. Reason for the carnage. Things make sense.
Not only that, but the rest of the book is great too, all leading up to the final scene, which I thought made for an excellent cliffhanger. Definitely the best of the three issues so far.
