A funny, cartoony book for young adult readers, American Born Chinese received a lot of favourable attention from both the comics industry (it won an Eisner and a Harvey), and from heavyweight literary awards such as the National Book Awards. It's highly recommended for readers in its target audience, as well as educators, and its message, intent and execution are all laudable. Older readers might find it a bit "kiddie" in terms of its themes and storytelling.
