Incredible Herc!

Greetings all!

I just finished the first two trades of Incredible Herc (World War Hulk: Incredible Herc and Incredible Herc: Against the World). I thought the World War Hulk trade was "ok" but did a great job reinforcing the idea that real heroes--and real heroic actions--require a mitigated use of power (or perhaps the creative use of power) in order to subdue, or otherwise defeat your enemies, without the taking of lives.

Incredible Herc: Against the World, on the other hand, is one of the best trades I've read in the past year. It was action packed, included some wonderful nods to the Bronze Age--including The Champions AND the Behemoth Helicarrier from the Godzilla comics of the late 70s!--and it was also freakin' hilARious! Pak writes Ares in a way that is both full of the aforementioned hilarity and also full of the douchbaggery that we have come to expect out of the god of war. His speech-as-narrative-field-report is particularly funny; he has a way of yelling his alibi out loud as he breaks the law, oversteps his Initiative mandates, and even attacks his own teammates, in pursuit of his brother Hercules. It's great! And I highly recommend it to anyone who may not have yet checked it out.

Anyway, I noticed--thanks to my Comixology pull list--that the next Herc trade is due out this week. It's the Secret Invasion, God Squad, story. As that I'm a trade waiter, I haven't check it out yet. I was hoping someone could share a few of their thoughts on the arc (though no spoilers please). The basic plot of Earth's pantheon battling the Skrull pantheon doesn't intrinsically interest me, but again because Pak did such a fantastic job with Against the World, I am eager to read more of his work on Herc.

Sooo, Incredible Herc: Secret Invasion, any thought? Comments? Love? Hate? Sandwich? ... ... ...Nevermind that last one, it's time for lunch is all...

First of all, I've stayed on the book since planet hulk, WWH and then the shift to herc, and surprisingly to me, the series has been a fun crazy ride that combines modern superheroics with age old mythology, and a buddy cop vibe that no other book has going right now. I'm reading it monthly, that being said, I remembered the God Squad arc as a continuation of the blending of mythology (more than just greek this time) and a clever plot that keeps it out of the trap many tie ins (especially SI's) fall into. Worth getting, a fun arc, although I enjoyed the next one (Love and War) even more... Great book, go Herc!!
