I believe Kick-Ass by Mark Millar and Romita Jr. is easily the most overrated comic being published today.
I'm not sure what Millar think is edgy and new, but if the use of texting and myspace are the best he can do, he needs to try a little harder.
And as for the supposed ultra-violence, Millar himself did this way better almost 10 years ago with Wanted, and Ennis does violence better each month [well... almost each month] with Crossed.
I bailed with issue #5. Had I realized at the time it was only going to eight, I might've ridden it out. I'm sure I'll pick-up the final 3 issues at some 50% sale or in a Dollar Box at a show some day. I just could no longer justify the Retail Price Tag for that book.
Yeah, but JR's work hasn't exactly evolved over say the last 5 [maybe 10 or 20??] years. Which is to say, if you're looking for a Romita Jr. art, you can go to Daredevil, Spiderman, or any number of other Marvel titles to get your fix.
Speaking of Millar, I think the Old Man Logan storyarc is overrated. I liked it when he was a pacifist, but relying on Wolverine to go berserk is just too predictable.
I think relying on Alternate Futures to tell a story to be lame to begin with.
However, McNiven's art on Old Man Logan is probably the best looking comic of 2009.
Oh come on. Old Man Logan was awesome.
Millar built an excellent version of the Marvel U that seemed fresh at least and he had a lot of cool ideas. Sure we all knew Logan would lose it in the end and kill everyone, and anyone with half a brain knew what was going to happen, but it was still a fun ride.
Not only that, but it had killer art and extreme violence, Count me in anytime these two want to team up on anything.
I wasn't expecting anything but a good time from this one and I got what I wanted 100%.
Hey Now! I didn't nominate Old Man Logan. It was that other dude [gregwebster]. I was just saying that I think that using an alternate future is a cheap story device. Overall though, I really liked Old Man Logan.
Still, without McNiven, this book wouldn't have been half [maybe even 1/10th] as good.
PS. healing factor kicking-in after being eaten??? Come on!!
Heres an overrated book:
CHEW.
I read the first two. What the hell is making everyone crazy about it? I honestly think the premise is dumb.
Guy eats stuff and gets psychic feedback from whatever it is. Then he solves crimes with that knowledge.
ehhhhhhhhh. It's a stretch. I didn't hate it but honestly I can't fathom why people are paying $50 for issue 1.
